Here we are at the dawn of the second day ! By dawn I mean... rather around 9.30 am to have a good breakfast and hang out a bit before leaving to discover the city !
As planned, I visited Qorikancha on la Avenida del Sol. In the quechua lenguage, Qorikancha means "compound of gold". It was the centre of the Inca kingdom - which included Perù, a big part of Bolivia, the north-west of Argentina and the north of Chile - and the place where all the Inca sovereignes' ceremonies were celebrated : the Temple of the Sun. Everything there were adorned with gold or silver, and sometimes encrusted with precious stones.
When the spanish invasion occured, Qorikancha was pillaged and destroyed. The colonists then used its foundations and relics to built a convent : the Santo Domingo church, which still exists. Consequently, the visit is more based on the spanish colonization and the way they used the convent for evangelism, thanks to the missionaries and paintings describing the Bible.
What we can see there are Inca relics well preserved, hundreds of religious paintings and the big patio.
Then, I went to eat at the market San Pedro, to a walking time from la Plaza de Armas. That's an experience ! The marked is divided in different areas, depending what is sold : fruit juices, fruits and vegetables, clothes, meats and an area where you can eat. That's a huge mess in there, with undescribable smells (in the good and the bad way !). When you are in the fruits area, it smells good mango, papaya and others exotic fruits ! But in the meats area, that's different ! Obviously, there aren't fridges so the meat is just put on the slacks, with flies flying around, and behind this the peruvian girl cutting up the meat with an axe !
And after,I went to eat in the eating zone where there is everything : dingies fast food-likes, dingies specialized in chicken, beef or soups. I stopped in a little one, attracted by the cook yelling "Amigo ! Menu completo, 3 soles !". So I sat there, beside peruvians who were already eating packed on a little table, and who stared at me, pretty perplexed ! A vegetable soup plus a course with ckicken, potatoes, rice with vegetable sauce for 0.75 euro, sure I take it !
And for the end of the day, let's eat a good burger and drink a good peruvian beer in an english pub on la Plaza de Armas, pub owned by... peruvians !
